CNN —In Alice Rohrwacher’s latest movie, the gently hypnotic “La Chimera,” a rakish Josh O’Connor navigates the Italian countryside with a dowsing rod in hand, searching for ancient treasure. “My job is very close to what an archaeologist does: giving meaning to things that happened in the past.”A still from "La Chimera," which was shot on three types of film stock. There's a split internally at $65 billion Marshall Wace. The 27-year-old London-based hedge fund, founded by Paul Marshall and Ian Wace, has prided itself on its collaborative culture. Multi-strategy mightThe culture shift at Marshall Wace is just the latest ripple effect to come from the vast expansion of power, assets, and clout of the largest multi-strategy hedge funds. For Marshall Wace, that looks like a charge that can be up to 0.75% of the $22.4 billion Eureka fund's value — more than $150 million — on top of the set management fees and variable performance fees the firm already charges. A person close to the firm said that certain people still have access to aggregated positions, but the restriction helps Marshall Wace manage "complexity and confidentiality" as the manager continues to grow.

Jerry Seinfeld Can No Longer Be About Nothing
  + stars: | 2024-05-04 | by ( Matt Flegenheimer | Marc Tracy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
Jerry Seinfeld became a mic-cradling, cereal-eating, “did-you-ever-notice”-ing avatar of American Jewish life with a brazenly shrugging persona: a merry indifference to weighty material as a comedian and in his megahit TV show about nothing, as petty and apolitical as he seemed to be. Now — off-camera, at least — Mr. Seinfeld appears to have reached his post-nothing period. Since the attacks of Oct. 7 in Israel, and through their bloody and volatile aftermath in Gaza, Mr. Seinfeld, 70, has emerged as a strikingly public voice against antisemitism and in support of Jews in Israel and the United States, edging warily toward a more forward-facing advocacy role than he ever seemed to seek across his decades of fame. He has shared reflections about life on a kibbutz in his teens, and in December traveled to Tel Aviv to meet with hostages’ families, soberly recounting afterward the missile attack that greeted him during the trip. He has participated, to a point, in the kind of celebrity activism with which few associate him — letter-signing campaigns, earnest messages on social media — answering simply recently when asked about the motivation for his visit to Israel: “I’m Jewish.”

From the beginning, Mr. Trump’s admirers have compared him to a paradigmatic outlaw hero, Robin Hood. Mr. Trump may not deserve the comparison — critics of his 2017 tax cut called it a reverse Robin Hood — but myth has a way of overstepping mere fact. Did Jesse James really pay off a widow’s mortgage, then rob the greedy banker who took the cash? For that matter, did Robin Hood really rob the rich and give to the poor? Like Joaquín Murrieta, the 19th-century Mexican laborer working in California who, according to legend, responded to injustice by vowing that he “would live henceforth for revenge,” Mr. Trump has promised to avenge the downtrodden.

KQED/KFF Health News —A much-awaited treatment for postpartum depression, zuranolone, hit the market in December, promising an accessible and fast-acting medication for a debilitating illness. Miriam McDonald, who developed severe postpartum depression and suicidal ideation after giving birth in late 2019, battled Kaiser Permanente for more than a year to find effective treatment. Her doctors refused to prescribe brexanolone, the only FDA-approved medication specifically for postpartum depression at the time. Insurers’ policies for zuranolone will be written at a time when the regulatory environment around mental health treatment is shifting. In the meantime, Burkhard said, patients suffering from postpartum depression should not hold back from asking their doctors about zuranolone.

Automakers wanted to emulate Tesla's success, with some promising to exclusively offer EVs in the not-too-distant future. Above all else, the new Free Application for Federal Student Aid was designed to improve college access. As of the last tally, nearly 4 million students have submitted the 2024-25 FAFSA form so far. That’s a fraction of the 17 million students who use the FAFSA form in ordinary years, according to the U.S. Department of Education. For most students and their families, the amount of financial aid offered and the breakdown between grants, scholarships, work-study opportunities and student loans are key to covering the tab. “Every student should anticipate doing an appeal this year,” said Bethany Hubert, a financial aid specialist with Going Merry by Earnest.

LONDON (Reuters) - British police have launched a manhunt for a suspect who injured several people by throwing a corrosive chemical on them, with political attention focusing on his status as someone who had been granted asylum after a conviction for sexual assault. Three other women and one man who came to their aid suffered minor burns injuries and five police officers who responded were also injured. "Wednesday's attack on a mother and her two children in Clapham was appalling," Britain's interior minister James Cleverly said in a statement on Friday. A source familiar with the case told Reuters that Ezedi had been granted asylum in Britain and had a previous conviction for sexual assault. Police said it was reported that Ezedi had thrown a child to the ground and that the chemical used in the attack was alkaline.

Here's what to know, according to Rumbach and David Pogue, host of the podcast "Unsung Science" and author of "How to Prepare for Climate Change: A Practical Guide to Surviving the Chaos." Both experts were interviewed by CNBC during a recent discussion about climate change and its impact on personal finance. "Over time, each incremental increase in climate change is going to up the economic cost bit by bit," Rumbach said. Lewiston, Maine CNN —The signs were there: hearing voices, expressing paranoid thoughts and making threats so violent, extra patrols were sent to guard a military installation. Instead, law enforcement relied on the gunman’s family to keep guns from him after they tried without success to talk to the reservist. The Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office sent an alert to other law enforcement agencies saying they were trying to locate Card.
